In the middle of the North Island of New Zealand, you will reach Lake Taupo. With a perimeter of over one hundred and ninety kms, it is famous for its hot pools and excellent trout fishing. We caught up with our old friends, Luke and Di and within an hour or two of meeting them, we were kayaking in one of the many tranquil bays around the lake. Not surprisingly, the lake itself was created by a volcanic eruption about 25,000 years ago.
Kayaking – Lake Taupo Adventure
So you thought you have to visit Queenstown or Rotorua for adrenaline seeking fun did you? How wrong is that?! Lake Taupo and the surrounding area has it all from jet boating up to Huka Falls (which are amazing) to bungy jumping over the Waikato River, skydiving or skiing…it’s an incredible place.
Unfortunately, we could not take advantage of all the activities on offer as we were travelling with our two small children, not that that put us off having a good time with our friends. We stayed at the Anchor Hotel about a mile out of the centre of town right on the lakeside which was perfect as it had both a pool and hot tub – which were great after all the activities during the day.
"Thanks to your website I decided to stay an extra night - the restaurant recommendations were excellent!"
