Havana Coffee Works – certainly one of the best coffee making centres in Wellington
The best coffee in Wellington is made by world-class local baristas. From coffee carts and shipping containers to long-established epicurean cafés. Coffee in Wellington is everywhere and not just any old coffee but great coffee. If you are visiting for the first time you will most definitely need to know where the best latte or flat white can be found. Unless you are a huge coffee connoisseur you might not know that Wellington is home to a thriving café culture. In fact, it’s so significant it has become an essential component of Wellington’s vibrant character for the past twenty years.
Here at What to do In Wellington we each have our preferred coffee serving venues. That said, every conversation with a Wellingtonian will almost certainly throw more coffee-themed names into the mix. No matter whether you’re in Wellington for just a few hours or have a longer capital itinerary make time to visit one of our suggested venues.
Peoples Coffee in the Newtown suburb brew great coffee. This roast-their-own, well-loved set-up are so committed to the coffee cause they even have a mission statement. Connoisseurs definitely but service with a smile and an attitude refreshingly free of coffee snobbery are all found here.
Considered by many to be as good as it gets anywhere in New Zealand coffee-wise, the Flight Coffee Hangar folk even have their own coffee farm venture in Colombia. Expect a cool warehouse vibe and a food menu designed to make your mouth water.
If you fancy trying something outside of the norm head along to one of Wellington’s Customs Brew Bars. Here you can sip your way through some of the ‘rare and interesting’ blends on offer.
Some of us like quiet and contemplative coffee moments, some of us like fun and funky. If it is the latter which floats your soya milk flat white cup check out the Havana Coffee Works. Establishment owner Geoff Marsland is a colourful character but make no mistake – the coffee roasted here is top notch and quality is taken seriously.
Maranui Cafe – an institution of Wellington right on the seafront – definitely not to be missed!Coffee Hotspot Wellington Favourite
Continuing on the theme of funky, swing your way through the bright red doors of the Maranui Café at Lyall Bay. Situated right on the beach, with stunning views, you will love the cool, fun and bright décor. The cafe is a Wellington institution with plenty of snack and food choices on the menu. The folk here claim they serve up the best coffee in Wellington, which is just one of many reasons it’s our personal favourite.
No matter what time of day or night it is, iconic Cuba Street is always a great place to be. Fidel’s manages to encapsulate all that Cuba Street is within its cosy and eclectic interior. With a popularity and reputation which continues to grow daily, reviews consistently rate Fidels as the best coffee on Cuba Street. Others say its as good as it gets for coffee in Wellington, full stop. You won’t find us disagreeing especially as it serves up all kinds of yummy food choices too. Another favourite is the Milk Crate on Ghuznee street, close to the shops along Cuba street.
One last word here – our capital is a little different to anything you may be used to with regards to the typical metropolises from around the world. High quality coffee in Wellington is the norm not the exception. With that, of course, are the warm welcomes and all round service.
